Personal comments
To study abroad is the best way to learn a language. You have to deal with the University, exams, instructors, other students, companies and employees, friends and so on. There's no better way to learn a language that fast.

Final comments
Book your flights very early, then you may get some discounts (maybe there are some student discounts too). A round trip ticket is also a very good idea (book all flights ahead, to go there and to come back), that makes it cheaper too. If you want to travel within the US (and there is a lot to see) book Youth Hostels or flights here in Austin over the Internet - you can get very good deals! - for example just USD 99,00 from Austin to Los Angeles with Southwest Airlines. Keep your luggage small, believe me! If you need a shirt, shoes or something else, you can buy it in Austin very cheap.

I lived at Riverside. Many people told us not to do so. But it was very nice and cheap. It was a bit far from University, but the Shuttle Buses from the University were running frequently and it was no problem to get to the classes or to downtown or to shopping malls or whatever.

First you should not miss a dance club called "Midnight Rodeo"! Second you should definitely eat a steak in a real Texan Steakhouse! Third go out at 6th street, there are more bars and clubs than you can imagine, for example "Friends" or "Spills" are very nice. There are also nice bars and locations on 5th street! Fourth you should not miss the great football games of the UT team called "Longhorns"!!! Fifth you should go shopping to the shopping malls like "Barton Creek" or "Highland" or others!
