Use the internet to call home. Skype is a good one. Shop on the internet for just about everything. Amazon.com holds everything you need. Shop at the big warehouses for furniture etc. Target is very cheap.

You live differently. You are more social when on exchange, have less time for everyday stuff so you eat out more and obviously go travelling more. Food itself was expensive in Madison, nightlife cheap.

The food, rent and telephone is more expensive in gerneral. The nightlife was cheaper because because we never had to pay cover. When u travel in the USA you need to take the plane every time.

Nightlife is pretty cheap in Madison. But the only grocery store close to my appartment is quite expensive and the closest supermarket about a 30 min bus ride away.

housing was very expensive, and food too if you want to buy it downtown. unfortunately all the cheap supermarkets (aldi, woodman's) are outer town and you'd need a car. plus, you need to buy things you couldn't bring oversea. e.g. a boom box, dishes, etc.

great thrift store: st.vincent de paul in 1309 williamson street. withdraw maximum cash at ATM machines with your home debit card. I think this is cheaper than a transfer at once.

Even the dollar-euro exchange rate was very good for me, my exchange semester was quite expensive, because during the first time you don't know where you find the cheapest things.
