Personal comments
Joining a "cirlce," or student club is a good way to get out at night to drinking parties. A lot of international students go to The Hub, which has a lot of international cusomers.

Housing
Type of housing: First Hometsay, then dorm, then independent
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: In the Dormitories
Why?
The dorms are cheaper then renting Apartments, and they are close to the University. A homestay is fine for a while, but it might get in the way of your studies and social life. However, a home stay is a great way to learn the language.

I lived in the Hoshien dorm for a while, which was very nice. I heard the facilities are even better now.

Academic
Course recommendations
Choose your teachers wisely. Some are great, but some are really horrible. Also, I resented having to take classes in English from Japanese professors, especially when my Japanese was better than their English.

Personal comments
Classes with Japanese teachers tend to be more typically Japanese. You just listen to the teacher speak, and cram for a big test at the end. Other classes taught by international faculty tend to be more interactive and stimulating.

Again, join a student club, get out into the univerisity. You will gain a lot of connections by attending Waseda, so use them when you can.
