Aspect was the best cafe. It is located kiddy corner to the university. It is a great place to have coffee, but you definately have to have their baguettes! Their great. The best night club is Kagan. It is on the 17th floor of a building right near the Hauptbahnhof. You have to check it out! Thursday's are student night, so the cover charge was minimal, but otherwise it is pretty spendy.

Housing
Type of housing: Student rooms off campus
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
Living with a family gives you the opportunity to get more involved in the culture and get a better grasp on the language.

I lived in student housing and shared a two bathrooms and one shower with three other students. I shared a kitchen with seven other students, four which were German and three which were also exchange students. The cleanliness of the housing depends, of course, on who you are living with. Our kitchen was disguisting, but that was because no one would take care of it. The laundry facilities were ok, but it was annoying because you had to use laundry tokens, which could only be purchased between 4 and 5. But as long as you have good roommates you can have a great experience!

Personal spending habits
Food is much cheaper in Germany and housing was relatively cheap. The dollar was very strong when I was in Germany, so that is the main reason why I spent less money.

Final comments
If you are looking to have a good time, go to Freiburg...if you are trying to advance academically, try a different University with less exchange students.

I wish that the academics were more structured. The classes for German students weren't structured, but there was more expected of you, so one MUST take initiative. The classes for German as a second language classes were so unorganized and it seemed like the professors didn't care too much how the students did. You could almost never go to class and write an ok paper at the end of the term and get a good grade.
