I wish I had known...
I should have researched American University in Bulgaria more before enrolling. I had a very bad experience there. Cost of living in Blagoevgrad was very low, but so is the quality of the education. Professors are awful; there are only 5-6 useless majors to choose from; no variety of majors and classes. Overall, studying there was a waste of time. No to mention the AUBG increased for no reason a lot of fees after my enrollment. Prospective students should avoid it at all cost.

Overall
Great student life and campus. The university tries to bring close students. The environment is multinational and everyone is accepting and friendly. When it comes to the studies the courses can be quite challenging at times, but if one puts time and effort, you can see good results. A lot of essay writing, projects, homework, quizzes, and exams. The university will keep you busy but that is the point and in the end, you learn how to manage your work and be productive. Still, some majors are not as well developed as others in terms of the quality of professors and the variety of courses. Great for business, journalism, theatrical, political studies.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
I like interacting and socializing with collegues from AUBG- living on campus seems the best option

Personal comments
Housing was pretty good- separate bathrooms for each apartment or double rooms, good furniture and most convenient is the location of the residence halls- close to the AUBG main building

If at all possible avoid the summer excavation program. However, the curriculum at the American University is very strong, more challenging than many I have encountered in the States. I strongly recomend persuance of a undergraduate degree at this institution.

In conclusion, my study abroad program in Bulgaria changed my life. I can use it as a measuring tool in my life. For instance, events in my life happened either "before Bulgaria," or after. I returned to Bulgaria the following summer ('97), and additionally five more times. I have a new Bulgarian family vis a vis my wife. I would encourage any student to study at the American University. Moreover, I encourage them to leave their egosentric tendencies behind, and spend a lot of time with Bulgarians.

There is no other place like it. I wish that I could have finished undergrad studies there.

I was a student there 5 years ago, and now Bulgaria has modernized A LOT.The school has improved as well ( I have visited twice recently) and it is better oragnized, with nicer living conditions, etc. Be open minded while you are there, it is not for everybody.
