Its a very open and social university, but the classes you receive are still quite good. If you notice they are too easy, you can easily upgrade to a more advanced class. The language classes are quite low in standard, maybe thats because in the Netherlands people start talking foreign languages much earlier

Make sure you get a railway discount card if you intent to travel from and to the airport in London to fly with ryanair. Also look for flights quite a time in advance as they are a lot cheapier. With ryanair you are able to fly very cheaply to west-europe. (50 euro average return-ticket price)

Personal spending habits
A mobile Sim Card is very cheap in England compared with France (I recomend Virgin mobile). And wanted to enjoy so I went out and travelled a lot. But at the end I spent less than in France cause in France I have no grant while in the UK I had the erasmus grant.

It's hard to open a bank account when you stay only one semester. Tell the bank that you stay one year. Then it's very easy to find a job in Cambridge. You can work flexible for a work agency such as Blue Arrow or Berkley Scott. Various colleges of the University of Cambridge are constantly looking for catering staff, mainly waiters. Introduce yourself in many colleges and ask them if they need staff.

Learniong English in Britain is easy. Ony problem as a foreigner: courses are often with other foreigners and one has to carefully make sure that there is no lack of communication with native speakers. Participating in any kind of sports solves that problem rather quickly though. Main languages spoken in the business school are besides English: German (lots!!!) and French. Sometimes majority in a class of foreign origin, which is not so good (specially when they are all from the same country)

Overall
I have started looking for my placement in early September 2019. I knew I was going to be geographically restricted to the area between London and Cambridge for my placement. I was looking for placement in the human resource (HR) area, event organization as well as marketing. Although I do study HR management and would like to work in recruitment after graduation, I was keeping my mind open when it came to search for placement. I knew that this year would be a great opportunity to explore my other interests, such as marketing, and get an overall feel of how real business is being operated. I was willing to get a placement outside of the HR area if I would get real work experience and training instead of doing simple meaningless tasks. By the end of March, I was anticipating multiple offers from companies that I had over three interviews with and assessments. However, due to Covid-19, those businesses paused all hiring decisions indefinitely. Some even had to lay off some of their workforce. It was pretty upsetting, given the amount of work and effort I put into the search and interviews with assessments. Nevertheless, I continued my search and broadened the companies that I was looking at. I found this company Fathom that I have never heard of before. They were providing accounting services online and had a very good-looking product. Taking into consideration that accounting class was always my least favourite, I could appreciate that Fathom is aiming to make accounting simple and more assessable to every person. When I looked at the description of what they were offering for a placement year, I knew immediately that it would be worth applying because they covered everything I wanted from placement year. They are currently a small team of eight that had plans to hire another eight people within the next 12 months, and I could be part of this recruitment process, which is something that made me excited. They also offered comprehensive training and a promise that I would get to work with every part of the business giving me a general overview of how it is being operated. Thus, I sent them my CV and cover letter. After a few days, I received a response that they want to interview me. The interview went great, and in a few more weeks, I got an email asking to complete some more assessment and final interview. The final interview went great, and within the next two weeks, I should hear back from them with their final decision.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I lived in a shared house with other foreign students and I really got on well with them(and we kept in touch). I enjoyed this life in community so I think this is the best accomodation option to meet people and make real friends.

The standard of APU shared houses is quite low but the rent is cheap (around £200 per month) compared with private housing. Moreover the APU accomodation office is always available to sort out technical problems in the house.
