Although English is the official language of instruction, there are many officials not speaking at all -or only speaking a few words- of the English language. Still most people are very friendly if you are trying to make them understand including Turkish in your sentences.

The university is a comfortabel English bubble. If you don't want to learn Turkish, you don't really have to. If you want to learn Turkish, you have 15 million+ victims outside the campus to practice with...

I had ample opportunity, through living with a Turkish speaker and the friend I made in Istanbul, to practice and gradually improve my conversational Turkish.

Sometimes especilly outside the school it became a problem for me. But Turkish people are so helpful in these situations.

I spoke both the language of instruction (English) and the host country language (Turkish) at a fluent/native level before and after my study abroad. So there was no problem at any point.
