Thai is not an easy language for someone from a western country. If you know the basics though, you will find it easy to have conversations with locals. students speak english.

Pack you backpack and spend a lot of time travelling around. go to the golden triangle, to some national parks, to the temples. don't waste time and let the thai students show you their country. they are so nice and very proud of their culture. you will see so many things.

GO THERE, you'll love it. Thailand is great. And take your time to go to Bangkok and if possible to go to Vietnam and Cambodia as well.
