Nightlife and telephone bills really caught up with me in the end. Since one is in a new, exciting, vibrant city, nightlife is important. Also, since I was not working in Paris, I had no extra income. Travel, in general, is cheaper in Europe and the opportunities are greater. Food did not amount to much since our facilities came equipped with a kitchen, a definate plus when considering longer-term accomodations.

Phone Cards! It saves so much money, but shop around for them first and try to find the best rates possible. Also, buying metro tickets in bulk, such as a carnet or monthly pass, as opposed to singe tickets.

For most of the categories it's a matter of being in the endless opportunities Paris provided. You can easily enjoy yourself without dropping your savings and can eat and travel cheaply too.

Bring your laptop if you have one, saves on talking to loved ones back home (via aim or Skype which is IMO the best program ever created) and keeps you up to date with what's going on in the country and home. Cost of the trip from Uni was most surprising, though that depends on where you attend school.

Paris, France is more expensive than Madison, WI. And also when studying abroad I was more prone to dine out, travel, and experience more of the night life. Food and drinks were more expensive and I also did not have the ability to cook my own food.

It did surprise me how expensive school supplies, food, clothing was. I would take out larger sums of money from the ATM to avoid service charges from my home bank and then store the money I didn't need to carry around in a safe place in my host family's home.
