Housing
Type of housing: also independently
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
I think living with a family is the most beneficial aspect of studying abroad. You have the culture and the language at your fingertips and can learn first-hand experience of both of these while living with a native. Living alone you tend to isolate yourself and speak your native language. It's difficult to engage a stranger in a conversation, therefore your skills suffer and you learn and experience very little about the culture. My language and appreciation for French grew leaps and bounds because of my host family experience. I not only have fond memories and forged new friendships but feel that I have a good idea of what it means to be an international citizen and be globally aware.

My housing was provided through an outside agent that my home university chose, called Accent Intl. Half-way through my program I unfortunately fell ill and was unable to continue living with my host family and lived in a dorm, also provided and maintained by Accent. The dorms were nice but terrible compared to my host-apartment. It was isolating, in a boring and rather cold district of Paris, and provided little opportunity for me to speak French or learn any culture.

Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
My language skills improved the most during meals with my host family. I learned a lot from my host family and they were very nice. It was nice to have the support of a family while far away from my own friends and family.

L'Institut Catholique doesn't have its own housing (as far as I know). The options providing by my home university when abroad were to either live alone in a studio or to choose a host family.

Housing
Type of housing: convent
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: same place was fine
Why?
The accomodations were excellent for stundents. It was very clean, comfortable and very Parisian! The location was at the quartier latin, a hub for French intellectual students. It was exactly what I was looking for.

It was generally nice. The property was beautiful, though the dorm was old. There were many international students, and the canteen was affordable.
