Due to the fact i spend a lot of time with german students and not just with other international students, i think i picked the language up a lot quicker, especially with slang terms etc. as for the language at the university, well i coped. it wasn't too difficult, then then i had to really concentrate and there were several occasions when i couldn't understand anything eg in lectures

ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY WERE A CONSTANT SOURCE OF CONFUSION DURING THE FIRST SEMESTER. IT DID IMPROVE WITH TIME, HOWEVER. THE US UNIVERSITY TRIED TO HELP WITH INTEGRATION AND GAVE COURSES IN 'CULTURAL AWARENESS' AS A PRE-REQUISITE TO STUDY ABROAD. ONCE WE HAD LEFT THE HOST UNIVERSITY WE WERE PRETTY MUCH ON OUR OWN.

It was very hard for about first month -month and a half but then slowly was able to get into the language. The most essential factor was the ability to practice it with the fellow students. In the university itself, there hardly was any opportunity to use my language knowledge apart from the exams in the end of the semester.

The local languafe of common people was not always easy to understand. In the university tachers were very nice and spoke properly in any situation. Living abroad is absolutely necessary in order to learn the language and the culture.

Improved a lot my German knowledges. Together even with foreign students I used to speak German. I forgot a bit English! It was almost impossible sometimes what local old people were telling to you because of their Bayerisch strong dialect performances!
