Kobenhavns Universitet (KU)

The various institutes and departments of KU are spread throughout the city and I confined my courses to Anthropology with some language and culture courses and one additional course from the Theology Faculty. The Danish culture course, offered every fall by the International Office, is very helpful. Professors from a variety of disciplines (e.g., history, architecture, art history, film, literature, law) present an overview of Danish history, thought and expression. It is very enjoyable, although I think the course title is somewhat misleading, or perhaps mistakes culture for haute coutre. The courses tend to be small, tend to be seminar style, so slacking on the reading it not really possible. The classroom is professional, but relaxed. The Anthropology Institute at KU is very progressive in its use of theory. This, combined with the presence of excellent visiting faculty, made my courses at KU's Anthropology Institute foundational to my anthropological education.

The way that the Anthropology students are graded at KU makes it easy for international students who will only be there for one year to get off a little easy, compared to US coursework. This is not to say that the material isn't rigorous enough, it certainly is. It might be nice to have some sort of final synthetic paper for those who have spent one year in the Antropology Institute, or similar departments and institutes.

The university definitely doesn't make it so easy for you to navigate their system that's mostly in Danish (or full of broken links in English), and I've had some secretaries get angry at me because I keep calling for help! But most are friendly and your instructors especially are willing to help you. I love the seminar format in most of my classes- 10 or 20 students with the instructor allows for a lot of interaction. No problems at all with the language, all Danes will speak perfect Danish. Could offer more courses in English, but this depends on your faculty. I think the best assortment was with Law.

Try not to put things off to the last minute! But I really enjoyed the variety in ways of assessment. I'm used to getting all multiple choice exams back home and here I've gotten written essays, multiple choice and oral exams.

A lot of the humanities subjects are taught by well knows academics who have a lot to offer, and come from all over the world to teach. Many inspiring professors.

Could encourage interaction between the international students and the local students. I didn't make any Danish friends the whole time I was in Denmark- and not from want of trying!

International criminal law, international human rights law and war crimes are all good. Environmental is boring and Understanding the Reasoning of the EC Court & Energy law are difficult. DO THE DANISH LANGUAGE COURSE! It's so much fun!!

There aren't many classes and sometimes it feels like you're not a proper student.

Pretty good, except that I cannot speak Danish, so it brings some problem in communication with the local students.

not a whole lot of choices, but do-able

more interaction with danish students, and maybe less reading, and more assignments. (Believe me, your brain will be craving information)
