The International Office offered every international student the opportunity to take part in a Swedish basic language course for 2 weeks. After this course I learned Swedish at the University. For German speakers Swedish is not too difficult. You can learn the basic vocabulary very fast because they are quiet similar.
In Sweden almost everybody speaks English so it's just for politeness to learn the national language.
