I wish I had known...
Know more about the hall orientation. The hall orientation is for all singaporean students to get to know each other. I participated but found it difficult to get along with people because of big differnces. Maybe it would have been easier if I knew more in advance.

I think it has been a great experience to study at NTU. Mostly because it has given me the opportunity to get to know a new culture and a different way of thinking. The education system is very different from the one in my home university and I find it very interesting to see how it works here.

I advise everybody coming to Singapore to try to interact as much as possible with local students even though it can seam difficut to begin with. I have learnt a lot from having singaporean friends, they think in a way totally different from what I do. I would also recomend everybody to travel a lot!

I am a person that finds it most challenging and interesting to experience new things as they come. It was not that difficult to adapt to the Singaporean way of living. But if you like to have everything planned, you maybe have to consider to get hold of all kinds of information about the culture and and region before you travel to Singapore and Malaysia.

NTU is a university with ambitions, and works hard to tighten the gap to NUS, to become the leading University in Singapore and South East Asia.

If you get the chance to study in Singapore.......Take it!!! Singapore is a great country to experience and to live in. There are certain things you have to put into consideration. If you are going to Singapore you have to go there with an open mind. You have to be active and not rely on others to invite you. Singapore can be a very cold society but if you are an open person curious about learning abut new cultures Singapore is a tremendous country to study in.

Don't live on campus for more than six months. You will get problems with the lack of privacy after a couple of months. For 6 months it's ok though. But if you stay longer, go and look for an appartment in the city.

Go travelling!!! As much as you can. Singapore offers so much great opportunities for travelling. Organize your vaccinations at home, it takes a while before they start working.

How hot it was and how strong the Singaporean culture actually was. I didn't really appreciate it until I arrived. I got quite homesick initially.

This university is brilliant for business and one of the best in S.E.Asian. Singapore is also one of the most developed coutries in S.E.Asia and so operates as a really good spring board to the rest of S.E.Asia. NTU also has a lot of international students attending the university so you will never be alone. It also very cheap to live there and the sports facilities are good. If you are a sun worshiper like me, you'll love it as you can study in your bikini at the side of their full sized outdoor swimming pool.

Make sure you get all your vaccinations needed and take Malaria tablets when you are travelling around S.E. Asia. Try and see as much as possible of S.E.Asia and don't feel intimidated by the Singaporeans intense study habits. They are actually very inefficient and you can do just as well by using your time more sparingly. Try and set yourself up a business internship after your studies as there is a lot of great companies with there HQ's in Singapore and the expatriate culture is very different to the student culture so this will add to your experience and make it more valuable.

Now, being here, and almost finished, I wish I would have spend more time in preparation of this exchange for traveling to nearby countries.

Do not take too many clothes along!!! As a student, you need not more than swimming trunks, sandals, shorts and t-shirts. Otherwise, bring some alternative clothes over! Be well-prepared for your stay as well as possible short trips to neighboring countries. Try to have finished the larger part of your studies at your home institution, so that you can take just a few courses that are of interest to you.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
I would choose to live on campus, because of the cheap accomodation and the location to the auditoriums. The University is located quite far from downtown. Transportation to and from the university can be quite time- consuming if you live outside the campus. Another reason for me to stay on campus, is that other accommodation, such as renting an appartment, is really expensive in Singapore.

The room was quite small, if you take into account that I had to share it with another person. But the stay at Hall 9 was good and would have stayed there again if I had the chance. I met a lot of new and interesting personalities from all around the world, and learnt a great deal about the different cultures.
