Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Univerity housing is very strict (curfews, no guests and the likes). I like the independence finding your own accomadation offers. also get a better sense of living inthe city

Personal comments
I can't say much as i never received accomadation. i believe it to be pretty bad, as we weren't even offered it. there is one hall for erasmus students which is not nice at all, very dirty, shared rooms, small etc... the location is great though, very central.

Personal comments
Old fashoin is THE erasmus student get together, every wednesday...its worth it to kickstart your social life but you'll soon find that aperitivos at elephant, iguana, trattoria toscana, europe cafe ...take over. good underground music scene at Tunnel. wednesday nightsa t magazzini generali are good, free and good music. gay nightlife is not so good... segreta is ok.

In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
i think the experience of studying abroard is as much about the studies as the general cultural and life experience. the politecnico is good for offering both these as it is a pretty typical italian educationnal establishment. basically, you're going to get out of this uni as much as you give to it , no gifts.

During my experience abroad, I ...
(1) Never – (4) A lot
Became familiar with another culture
Met people from other countries
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies & career
Final comments
dont stay in milan. milan is possibly the best place to actually live in italy, its easy and a little more open adn international than other cities, theres lots to do, entertainment and cultural wise. but you can't miss out on the travel. travel is cheap, trains cost about one third of what they do in england and its a pretty smalll country. you can be in rome in 4 hours. places no to miss are the obvious, venice, florence, bologna, rome but check out the lakes (como, garda, maggiore) , the cinque terre, siena (and tuscany in general). if you get the chance, hit naples and poositano, the amalfi coast(beautiful). the mountains by novara are nice too. turin is close and worth a shot.

Academic
Course recommendations
better to go for profs rather than courses. the workload varies form course to course, so if you're looking for a good time rather than a hard core study experience, id go for the one semester labs. some profs are very pro erasmus, more helpful... dell'acqua, cesare, farini...

My academic experiences
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with international students
Interaction with local students
Personal comments
the classes are too big, too disorganised. its an interesting academic system, very big workload though erasmus studcents are somehow discounted as they are not often taken very seriously. this can be a little frustrating.

Languages
Language of instruction: Italian
Was learning Italian a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your Italian?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
its a lot of fun. i would suggest geting to grips with the local language before moving to the country as it helps to feel confident... and then, total immersion makes it very easy to pick it all up.
