I thought food was generally cheaper. Phone calls were of a similar price and calling home was not a problem as calling through the Internet is very cheap. Housing was slightly more expensive because the university was in the centre of a city. Nightlife was similar in price with beer and enterance fees matching that of the UK. Travel was always going to cost me more, because I had so much I wanted to see. However on a day to day basis I would have to say that public transport in Australia is far superior to that of the UK, with busses and trains being on time and cheaper.
Overall, Travel, Housing:
was more expensive than at home.
Telephone, Nightlife:
was the same price as at home.
Food:
was less expensive than at home.
Accessibility of student needs

Make the most of the free services ofered to you such as the free bus loops around the city.

When picking a bank use Commenwealth as they have the most ATM machines in the city and using another bank to your owns will cost you money. If you need a mobile phone go with Optus pay and go their tarrifs are amazingly cheap. If you travel up the cost make sure you spend at least a week in Byron Bay its quite frankly amazing.

Course recommendations
The Media and Journalism School is still developing itself. Student have the ability to challenge the course and their instructors because of the relaxed atmosphere. Given this freedom though one must take it upon him/herself to be completely responsible for his/her decisions and actions.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I lived in a shared flat with other students, which in my view was the optimal way of having great interaction with other people as well as the possibility of being very flexible.

There was a help desk set up in order to assist foreign students in their search for accommodation. I went there once, but in the end I found the house in which I lived through an advertisement.

Don't assume everyone communicates in the same fashion (e.g. speaking to someone face to face, verses just sending an e-mail out about a meeting, etc., was very important to the Australians and made the difference between people showing up and not.

Queensland University of Technology is a middle aged university hence, there is a lot it still has to learn yet the university is eager to learn. I was only involved in the Meida and Journalism school so I can not speak for the rest of the university. If you want a university that is in the heart of a beautiful city, compact, and that has friendly people, I highly recommend Queensland University of Technology.

Make an effort to interact outside of your nationality. Attempt to visit Australian's home and learn what their day-to-day activities include. Australia is a very safe country-but always be on gaurd. Make sure to see, sweat, feel, taste, touch, walk, run, skip, sing, yell, roll,...everywhere!!!

Accomodation are usually paid by the fort-night (every two weeks--not monthly). Travel only gets more expensive the the US when you are flying but this should give way in the near future with more competition entering the Australia.

Currently the exchange rate is in the US's favor--this was nice. Always ask if they have a 'student' fair.
