Housing
Type of housing: a room of a Dutch student studying abroad
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: a room in an apartement
Why?
It's fairly easy and cheap to find a room from the private sector in Groningen. It's an excellent way to get to know the local culture.

Personal comments
It was arranged well. If you didn't get a room in a dorm, the staff helped you to find a room from the private sector. The accommodation situation in Groningen is overall pretty good.

Course recommendations
The university is big and really bureaucratic, so signing up for classes and registering for exams can be tiring. Try to get someone to set you up with a student mentor who can show you the city, the university and where to register, etc. Also, getting books doesn't seem to difficult for the locals, but it was for me.

Course recommendations
Check out the European Law and International Law courses at the faculty of Law!!! You can attend them, even if you aren't a law student; just contact the exchange student coordinator for more information. Notice, though, that most of the courses in English at the Faculty of Law are LL.M. courses, so they are quite demanding and require a lot of studying. At the Faculty of Humanities there aren't many courses given in English, except for the Ducth Studies programme, the courses of which are interesting but not very challenging, since the academic backround of the students attending them varies a lot. The Dutch language courses are really useful, though!

No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your English?

My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)

Personal comments
The language of instruction was English, so I have not had any problems in academic area. Although it was an international program everything in the university and outside the university was Dutch. I find it nonsense but I have started to learn Dutch to overcome this challenge and adopt the environment and culture.

If you have a laptop, bring it because it will help immensely. Also, be ready to purchase a bicycle and mobile phone while you're there. And the toilets are funny. Good luck!
