Housing
Type of housing: Hall of Residence
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Because of the space, and also because I already know how to live in Germany, the regulations and costumes. On the other hand i will desire more independency and other kind of contact with the people.

When I started my program, the accomodation department at the University was not formal settled, aftwrwards I knew that they assist and help students to find accomodation according to their needs. Hamburg is a more expensive city compared with others in Germany, and this includes accomodation.

It was at the beginnning very hard to understand some of the complex situations and filling in the documents at the government offices, becaus at the very beginning I lived in a small village, so they did not talk or understand english at all. But I could do that without any major problem. When I moved to the city most of the people knew basics of English and even more, but by the time I learned more German and I could make conversations with the people at shops and at the government offices when I renewed my student visa. At the university ther is no problem to communicate in English with professors or students. As an introduction to the German culture, the Universities offer a widre range of opportunities to be part of the community.

I wish I had known...
A general guideline of the procedures for registration both at University and residence. Which documents are needed for the bank, inssurance, residence registration office, and University, the proper order. That would saved me time and effort. An advice on how to get an appartment/residence/flat before arriving, or a plan to arrive to certain hostels. Is important that the University knows how are these places, because they recommend them without knowing them, as they confess me after I arrive to one hostel. The office hours, for university, banks, and some clues regarding the working hours.

Personal recommendation
It is a relative new university, with modern facilities. It will be desired a higher interaction with labs and seminars. It is a nice place to met people, to know whatever you want, from scinence, arts, trhough humanities, in a different deepness level, according to the complementary knowledge you desire. It has a different system as the Anglo American one. And it gives a different and broad approach if you have studied in the Anglo American system.

Final comments
It is important to plan the trips you want to do. From the time schedule, through the costs, and estimation fo time required to travel and spend in one city, is good that you have more than one options, just in case. Have arranged all the duties at the university on time, will save you time, and also is better that you register on time and check if the courses you take are part of your course syllabus, mandatory of optative. The respect for the place you work or live is an important issue for the Germans, you need to arrange your dates with time in adavance if you leave, arrive, or make some modifications; maintain the facilities and objects that were on your responsibility are also important.

Personal spending habits
I spent more in Telephone, because of international phone calls and not for the normal use. I spent more even it were made by special carriers and not done by the Deutsche Telekom. Travel is also a more expensive issue, mainly because of transportation and food at the arriving city. However, the cheap flights are an opportunity they are not always are available through all the year.
