Erasmus trips are worthwhile but also great to hire a car and just pick a place on the map to visit. Madrid is great...little student events but great cafes in La Latina...and Sol for discos.

Living in a city means the cost of going out etc is going to be higher. Ringing home costs a lot more! I travelled most of Spain in the year so that was a big expense. Spain is generally very much cheaper than England but the volume of things adds up.

Cost-saving tip...open a bank account in the host country and transaction costs are very much reduced. An 'abono' for transport is also very handy.

I went to Spain with very little Spanish but by the end of the year I felt very confident both verbally and written. I took all modules and exams in Spanish. A real achievement for me.

Travel light, because you accumulate lots of things over the period of stay. Stick with it...at first lots of things are very different but for me it has been one of the most valuable experiences yet.
