Student life
Describe host city:
Students interact with the local community without much university involvement

Activities, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal social experience
Personal comments
It is difficult to give advice on the nightlife.
The main activity of university students was concentrated on meeting, drinking and socialising at the main plaza. As one can imagine it becomes a very filthy place after 11pm, unpleasent behaviour was not uncommon. There is not much choice of nightclubs, as the most popluar one had been closed down recently, due to a drug razzia. Not only did drugs dominate the nightlife in Cádiz but the people were very young.
My friends and I personally preferred having long dinners, meeting at someones house, play music (guitar) and spend time together. Food was more important, Disco I could always have plenty in London. As I say, better to concentrate on the best a place has to offer.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I prefer to live in an apartment and maintain a high degree of independence. This Apartment I can then share with fellow students, if possible of different nationalities. Next to being able to share costs, exchange experiences and study jointly, it makes the semester even more enjoyable and facilitates the integration into the new environment. Given this, the learn-effect, from an academic and personal point of view, is very high.

Personal comments
The university did not have student housing facilities on campus. As finding a suitable housing in Cádiz in general is very difficult, it is rather difficult for the university administration to give more help than the usual.

Academic
Course recommendations
The choice of courses and the availability/flexibility (time-wise) were excellent. We were able to create a schedule to our own liking and were allowed to the majority of classes. In addition we were able to chose our examination dates.
However, the teaching-styles on the other hand weren't necessarily convincing. Some teachers hardly favoured student-teacher interaction, did not allow for any discussions and nor independent and critical thinking. In some courses the teacher would read out the material for straight two hours, as for example in Marketing Túristico or Entrepreneurship.
I can only recommend to anyone to take classes where the subject is of great interest, one can always be unlucky and end up with a teacher who does not have the gift of delivering the material to his students in an interesting way.

My academic experiences
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with international students
Interaction with local students
Personal comments
No matter what great facilities universities have to offer, what matters most to me is the quality of teaching, the personality and capabilities of the teacher. I have had subject that I assumed to dislike, but with the right packaging of the material, one can surprisingly find a challenge and fun in almost all areas of study.
Therefore, also in regard of my home university, I believe that there should be more focus teaching styles.

Languages
Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your Spanish?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
In regard to my academic life and business spanish, the greatest learning effect was given though writing extensive essays and business projects, as for example our business proposal in entrepreneurship.
Slang and everyday usage of Spanish was rather limited to our free-time, to activities outside university and to the extend of making friendships with local students.

Overall
I wish I had known...
Spain is still very close to England and Germany, so it did not require any special preparations. I am very used to travelling and do not feel uncomfortable with unfamiliar situations.

In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
If you chose Cádiz, you will study in very modern buildings, situated right at the beach. The atmosphere is stimulating and the offer of courses very extensive and diverse. However,
Computer facilities are very restricted, so bring along a laptop if you own one, or borrow one from a good friend.
If you are lucky you will be taught by energetic and very friendly and helpful teachers, as most most of them were.

During my experience abroad, I ...
(1) Never – (4) A lot
Became familiar with another culture
Met people from other countries
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies & career
Final comments
Spain is a country that is very different to those of northern Europe.
Prepare yourself for having to get used to a completely different life-style and - rhythm, which can be very tempting and is very enjoyable (siesta, extensive dinners and nights).
Never take people too personal when they seem a bit rough, it is just their temperament, their immense verbal speed and their coarse voices from all the smoking.
Make sure you get a taste of the cultural life, the Flamenco (which I am learning now), the bullfighting, the stunning horses, the cuisine (wine, cheese, paella - which I love to cook) and of course the beautiful architecture. Make sure you do a trip through Andalucia, where the african influence has touched all aspects of spanish life.

Food, Telephone, Housing, Nightlife, Travel, Overall:
was less expensive than at home.
Accessibility of student needs
Second-hand household items
Personal comments
I have not had any negative surprises.
There is definately no need to own a car in Cádiz, as one can reach almost every place on foot.
Travelling in gerenal is organised very well, as for example bus-trips to neighbouring cities.
The living costs are not too high and one can live comfortably with around 5000 pesetas a week (food-wise).
