Overall level of english is lower than in the Netherlands. At university I have not experienced any problems besides explaining myself more than once towards local students. Concerning local people in shops or restaurants: learn cantonees a.s.a.p. I have not experienced any problems in government institutions.

In english, I did not have any problem to communiate, but in Chinese, when I was out of the University environment, it was quiet difficult to make understand my words, and their words.

I wished there would have been a proper course teaching Cantonese. Especially at the end of my stay I felt I was starting to get into it, then it was too late somehow.

The choice of Macao was mainly cultural. Afterward I wished I wished to have chosen the Cantonese language lessons. I thought a half year was to short.

I don't speak that much Chinese and they don't speak English and that caused problems sometimes.
