You need to speak italian, even if you don't know much is the best choice out of a language that you can make. People are helpful in Italy.
English don't buy much at the University,though.

The whole Trastevere is a good spot. Other nice places are Piazza Campo dei Fiori and Jonathan´s Angels near Piazza Navona!
