My understanding of the French language was fluent before I studied in Lyon, but my speaking skills were not as good. I think that I really improved my speaking skills by being able to interact with students, and by being forced to speak with others in my day-to-day activities.

Though classes helped to some extent, I cannot honestly say that that is where I learned French. I learned it in people's homes, in the streets, in cafes, copiously reading news and books, and oh yes watching TV.

I learned a lot of French while I was in France. Watching TV, seeing movies, reading books and the newspapers really helped. There's was plenty of things to talk about and plenty of time to talk about things.

I just had some difficulties at the beginning, expecially with words in verlan, the slang spoken by young people here. (Take a look here: http://french.about.com/library/vocab/bl-verlan.htm)

Slightly difficult at the beginning as most French people i met wanted to speak English, and when you don't speak much French it's easy to let them.

I expected to be fluent at the end of 4 months which was an over expectation. I am happy with my level of improvement.
