The best cafe is on Quai St Antoine - you get an amazing view of Vieux Lyon. On a Sunday morning you can enjoy oysters and wine after you've been to the market. The best night spot for me was the Ice Club (near Perrache station on the Rhone).Beware, alcohol is very expensive in bars, no student discounts!

Housing
Type of housing: a studio
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
Although university accommodation is pretty grotty, it is the best and easiest way to meet people.

I was pretty horrified on arrival at the state of my room and the halls in general. However, having lived there for a year now, it is much better and cheaper than living in a private flat. It can get lonely so its good to be in halls as you'll meet people really easier. From a language point of view living with a family would be in my point of view, the best way to improve your French.

I found the university very unorganised -so go in with a cool head and be prepared for no one to know what is going on. My main suggestion would be to have less paper work and to be more organised.

Personal recommendation
Its not really the university that has made my stay but Lyon itself which is amazing. The university is ok, same as most French universities I think.

Final comments
Try to keep away from your own nationality. Its very easy to spend all your time with (in my case) Anglophones. I had to make a concious effort to speak French. Above all make the most of the year. It will be hard at times and you will miss home but I can almost guarante you'll be very sad to leave.

Beware of the phone and internet - very expensive. Transport wasn't too bad and so so much better than at home. Nightlife was very expensive. Housing was a bargain.
