Une expérience riche et de belles rencontres
Mélanie C
France, Graduate
Marketing and Sales Management, 2017
Overall

Personal spending habits
In the US travel is expensive : airlines might offer reasonable rates, but the time you are away from work and studies is a factor in how "expensive" and inconvenient regular travel becomes. In France I found I could take a trip every month or so with the train, student discounts were abound, and hostels or budget traveling were simply more convenient to look in to. The telephone situation, well, if you buy a cell phone and use it without an "abonnement" then you're pretty much going to spend a lot of money.

Personal comments
Most things in Paris of cultural value are free to students. See if the Sorbonne can't hook you up with a "histoire de l'art" student card (should be easy if you follow the conference) so that you can get into most private museums for free. Movies are cheap, alcohol is cheap, everything is pretty inexpensive, and if you are out of cash, just walk around. If you plan to be there a year, make sure to get an Imagine R card for the subway.

It is a good school, but very unorganized. But no worries, French students do not know anymore than you do, they are just more used to the system.

I wish I had known...
I wish I'd known more French! And also that it's so easy to travel within Europe...I would have saved more money for train passes!

Don't travel alone at night. Ignore the rude comments from men. Bring ten times more money than you think will be sufficient. Try everything once! Just be careful.

Just do it. Go in with an open mind (which you probably have already if you are thinking about studying abroad) and you will have a great experience, probably the time of your life. When travelling, never rule out going anywhere you haven't yet seen b/c every place has something special to offer. If you go, just don't forget how lucky you are to be there and enjoy it! Also, if you happen to an American studying in Paris and you miss home, check out the American University of Paris (AUP) and see what they have to offer for trips, activities, etc. Also, around the corner from some of their buildings is a place called the Real McCoy which sells hard to find foods from home like jello, peanut butter, and chocolate chip cookies as well as sandwichs and other goodies.
