Lots of hiking spots!
Chambery is close to Italy and Switzerland. Bakeries are everywhere - all of which are the best :)

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
It was a combination of privacy and socializing. I had a roomate, but my own bedroom. I met a lot people in the building and someone was always looking for a friend to talk with or take a wal with.

It was great. It was very close to downtown and a nice scenic route to the university. Everything was in proximity - all could be done on foot! I had a view of the Alpes from the window!

Make a plan. I didn't...and it backfired. Try to get a little job - it can help. However, if you can't - you are subsidized by the government.

Academic
Course recommendations
Let your instructor know that you are an international student. They may want your advice on some things and also it is a nice way to meet local students. They may want to exchange language lessons. Be careful of the 100% exams...seems good but when it's time to study - it can be a lot. Be systematic :)

Overall
I wish I had known...
You don't get bed covers, pillows, kitchen utensils! Ease up on the clothes and bring more essential things! On the other hand, you will have a roommate most likely, so costs can be divided!

In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
Savoie University is amazing. Teachers (except for 1) were helpful and kind. Students took an interest in me and cared for my success. It's in a great location. Who else can see the Alpes from their campus!?

During my experience abroad, I ...
(1) Never – (4) A lot
Became familiar with another culture
Met people from other countries
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies & career
Final comments
This exchange experience changed my life. At first it was the hardest change I had ever made - and at the end, I didn't want to leave. I did not want to leave a country where travel is so easy and beautiful, and the people are warm and funny :)

Languages
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your French?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: At ease in most situations
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
You are forced to speak the local language so it is a wonderful learning experience. Most people can tell if you are a foreigner, but they are also forgiving and understanding.
