I spent more on accomodation, because the room I got was a bad deal, but I didn't know any better when I got it, and speaking very basic Spanish only didn't exactly help either. I spent more on Nightlife and Travel, because I went out more (Barcelona does that to you) and did more travelling (you would obviously want to see more of the country you're staying in if you're there for a year). Travelling within Barcelona (public transport) is fairly cheap though.

Food was cheaper. For my mobile I normally have a contract in Holland and there I had a pre-pay card. Accomodation there was smaller and therefor cheaper. I went out more, maily becuase of the wether and boring room mates. I traveled more because I was in another country, although the metro was cheaper than my public transportation card in the Netherlands.

There are many free of charge cultural events, depending on the institution; you have to go to museums and other places and just ask if and when there are any events for free

Some supermarkets are much more cheaper than other. It is also cheaper to call home with phone cards than with coins.
