PBL isn't as good as you think
Trevor T
Pays-Bas, Licence
Gestion d'entreprise, 2021
Évaluation globale
While the university is all in English and everyone speaks it at a more than serviceable level, Maastricht is just not good enough in terms of the Problem Based Learning that it swears by. No one really wants to be "discussion leader" and the "seven step process" that they tell you so much about in the introduction day is a farce that gets dropped by tutors almost instantly (it's no fun in practice anyway). And only in very few courses are you actually solving real life problems.
By the way, your grades are really impacted by your tutor, so you'd better hope you have a good one!
One more thing to know is that there is a LOT of maths in this degree, since it's a BSc. Be ready for that!

Points forts
Good English from most people, modern facilities, sometimes good professors, fairly nice people
Inconvénients

i visited a coffee shop (Hooven 69), as many exchange students i think! i just wanted to feel what is the ambiance inside. the town of Maastricht is really nice and it is proud of its history! there are others cities like Amsterdam or Utrecht that many students visited. it is very particular.

Commentaire personnel
All the courses were thaught in english and an important personal work was required every week including readings, papers, projects and presentations. This was a good way to really improve my english and to make it more practical than the english learnt in France or during occasional travels. About the local language, it's not essential the speak Ducth to live in Maastricht, at least for the University. In addition, most of the Ducth people are bilingual which makes evereday live easier for exchange students. For instance many German students study there as regular students but most of them don't speak Dutch. Nevertheless it's always pleasant to learn some words and basic phrases.

Holland is impressed by me as people are flexible and have multilanguage capabilities. English is normally spoken by citizens, therefore i don't feel an urgent need to learn Dutch and still feel comfortable to communicate with people here. In UM, working language is English, too.
