We lived in a building (2min from the university) full of foreign students. We had big rooms for 2 (34 m2) with kitchen & bathroom inside. And laundry in the basement of the building. It was just perfect!

something amazing about the Netherlands (or at least Amsterdam) is that everybody there is fluent (almost biligual) in English, even the people working in the street or in the supermarkets. So you can do everything with English. The drawback is that you're not prompted to learn Dutch...

- housing was clearly not cheap, but since I come from Paris it was still cheaper for me to live in Amsterdam.
Nightlife: coming from Paris, it also seemed very cheap to me.

Furniture: in Amsterdam, you can easilly find furniture in the street (for free) of course it's in a bad state but when you spend 10 months in a student room, you're happy to have a free sofa, bedside table, armchair...
Tip: instead of buying food in the supermarkets such as AlbertHeijn (expenseive) rather go to markets.
