It was very different from the grading and work system at my home university. While I am accustomed to a steady workload, in Amsterdam there were typically only one or two major assignments given which put a lot more pressure upon the student to keep up with their readings so that they are up to date in class.

Overall
I wish I had known...
I wish I had thought more about the negative aspects of a cultural adjustment, especially going into it completely alone. I am thankful for the emotional grwoth I have experienced, but which I had thought about it more beforehand.

Languages
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
The Dutch speak English better than most other European countries I have visited, so it made learning the language a little more difficult considering the natives would rather speak english to you than you speak dutch to them. Still, I found once a Ducth person saw your willingness to learn their language, they were very helpful, patient, and pleased.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I enjoy the independence an apartment gives. Also, staying close to campus allows me to meet other students while still having my own independent experience of the city.

Look out for cheap eats at Squat houses. And be aware of all the various schedules floating around cafes - there are always special events at all of the museums!
