In the department I was in (Electronic Engineering) there were some basic courses (4 or 5 courses) for all the students and some optional courses you could choose (4 or 5 to choose among 10).

The final project we had to do and the end of the Master was 90% of the time an academic project. I would have prefered to do a project in an industrial company.

I did an independent study program at the University College London's Slade School of Art. If you're thinking of doing the same, you MUST be a self-starter and self-motivator, because though all students in the program have mentors, none of the mentors will baby you and check up on you at every minute of the day to make sure that your work is progressing along as it should.
