Exciting experience
Simoné M
South Africa, Other courses
Business Studies, 2021
Overall
I was very nervous to start this course because I was fresh out of high school with no business experience, let alone strategic management and most of the people who had applied for this course were business owners or directors; overall I felt I was going to fail. I am so glad I was wrong! The course ended up being the most fun I've ever had - the content, the networking, and especially the graded projects. It was easy to understand and interpreter but most importantly everything we learned was easy to implement in our personal lives as well as our working environments. I would however, have liked a bit more feedback in terms of the grading process and how I could improve.

I wish I had known...
People will warn you that it is very dangerous, and although it can be at times, don't be on edge. Get to know locals and have atleast a little bit of trust in humanity.

Beautiful campus.. halfway up a mountain! The walk really isn't that bad, so if you have time in the morning try walking to class. Also, the schedule is kind of like a High School schedule. There is 1st period, 2nd period, 3rd.. lunch ( an hour where all students/staff have off for lunch). You won't have class during all those periods though.

Go on a safari! Amazing experience. Also, check out the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg. Stellenbosch, about an hours train ride outside of Cape Town, is a gorgeous wine "dutch" town. It's such a nice place. Explore places outside of Cape Town, even if it is just an hour away. Don't be afraid to take the train, just don't take it later than about 6 PM. Kruger is a great place too! Stay in Tamboti Tented camp (google it)... it was amazing. Also, go to Victoria Falls! BEAUTIFUL. You wont have many chances to go to Southern Africa, so please do as much as you can. It is an amazing combination of cities and nature.

Overall
UCT is the leading University in Africa. It has been ranked number one since the last 20 years. The lecturers are highly qualified and have conducted numerous research  that impacted the life of society. The life students is fabulous with their famous jamie shuttle to transport students in every area of the city for free. The wellness center that help students who are depressed or have other mental issues is another example of how students wellness is given priority. I personally liked how international students are treated  within IAPO (international Academic Programs office) when it comes to visa extension, helping in accommodation search and so many more. UCT is just an amazing place to study simply because it hosts almost all nationalities of the world.

Pros
Best in research , nice city of cape town and of course wonderful learning environment in place,
Cons
South Africa is generally characterized by criminality and some cases have been reported within the campus. As a student you need to be vigilant all the time and avoid to walk alone in isolated areas

Take classes that interest you but you maybe couldn't take at your home university. Also, try new things you wouldn't do at home.

A lot of my friends studied abroad, so I'm familiar with a lot of common places. Everyone I've talked to and shown my pics to is jealous they didn't go to Cape Town. It's one of the most beautiful cities in the world, has an amazing history, a great university and gorgeous beaches. It was truly the best experience of my life.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I loved living in apartment. We had our own space, yet were close to the University.

Personal comments
Housing can either be AMAZING or really really poor. There are houses that have twenty people or houses that have 3-4. Also, there are a lot of houses with little "huts" or "cabins" outside some larger houses were students are placed- the room usually has a bedroom and sometimes a bathroom... yet their kitchen, living room, etc. are all inside the main house. It is usually steps from the house. Specify what kind of housing you want while requesting housing and I think they are pretty good at giving it to you (EX: if you don't want to live with 20 people, note it! Or if you want to live with specific types of people (all female, all male, etc.) let them know)
