Helsinki is the capital city, so food, housing, entertainment, etc is more expensive than it would be in other cities. Local pubs often had cheaper drinks than those located downtown though.

It was very hard for me to open up a bank account in Finland - and to this day, I'm still not really sure why (I think it had something to do with the fact that I didn't have a Finnish social security card and I wasn't a permanent resident).
Most forms of travel have special student rates available - you only need to show your student ID card to receive them. Also, check out STA or Council travel for cheap rail passes or train tickets!

I would say that public transport is far more expensive than expected. One good way of saving money from travel expenses is to receive a confirmation from your university that you are accepted as a student for a sertain period. Than one has the right to buy a monthly public transport card.

I didn't have any special surprises. I knew the cost of living in Finalnd was higher than in Spain but until I came here I didn't how big the difference was. Going out, alcohol , cigarrettes, cinema, concerts, etc are very expensive! So, t least, I would quit smoking before coming to Finland.

Food is a little bit more expencive than at home. I got out more in the evening, hence more expense for nightlife. Traveling in Finland is cheap, students get 50% on most train and long distant buses, which are already without this discount cheap compared to Germany.

The cost of life is pretty similiar but it depends on what you buy and where you shop. The big stores are cheaper but there are some real bargin stores around. S-mart is cheaper than K-mart

The room for me was cheaper as in France I live in a private one room flat. The food is not expensive especially at the university cafeteria.
The traveling was easy and there are cheap prices for students for the bus and train network. than you can take the boat and go to Estonia or Stockholm.
for the nightlife, entries for students are cheap in students parties and you get cheap price as well if you go to the opera for example.

you have to pay all your bills by wiring through bill machine or internet but only through finnish bank accounts. That means that you have to open a bank account, it is compulsory.

PRÉSENTATION
The University of Helsinki (Helsingin yliopisto) is the oldest and largest university in Finland. It was founded in 1640 as the "Academy of Turku"; Turku being the former capital of Finland, which was then part of the Swedish realm. After Finland was
annexed to the Russian Empire in 1809, the capital was moved to Helsinki. In 1827 the University was transferred to Helsinki, where it opened the following year under the name of the Imperial Alexander University, after the Russian Czar Alexander the Second. It was the only university in Finland until 1919.
