Living expenses in the UK is at least 5 times higher than in China; for instance, with £10, I could have barely have a decent meal in a mediocre or lower class restaurant in UK. Whereas, in China, that money would have allowed me to goto an upper class restaurant and eat almost whatever I want and there will still be spare change from the £10. It is apparent that the living index in UK is very high.

Everything is expensive in UK. Be careful with food spending. If one likes drinking, alcohol in UK is relatively cheap. Try to avoid travelling too much, as I found out that travelling cost is where a large amount of my money got spent.

The exchange rate between Pund Sterling and Deutsche Mark was pretty bad during the time I spent in the UK. Overall the British price standard is mor or less the same as in Germany, only that sth that costs 1 DM cost 1 Pound in the UK, which makes about 3DM because of the exchange rate. Apart from that the South of England is especially expensive because of its vicinity to London and continental Europe.
