I wish I had known...
I wish I knew the layout of the surrounding area and its local character. It is not a bad place but there isn't much for a student to do off campus. What that means is that an exchange student does not get to intermingle with country natives, only other students who are most likely exchange students.

Go to Galway or Cork instead, the schools are more integrated with the local area instead of having an "islandish" feel to them, like UL.

Traveling around Ireland is difficult, especially because you cannot really rent a car unless you're 23-25. The public transportation system is seriously lacking, which also makes it hard to catch planes from the main airport if you intend on travelling outside of Ireland. There is positives too though, like Ireland's inexpensive airline, Ryanair, which can get you to the mainland for under $150 return.

It is a Uniniversity to make an on-campus life, because it is a bit far (20 minutes drive) from the town, but it is a really complete campus and you can find anythig you want in it.

The only helpfull advice I could give is to remark the idea that U.L. is a total student life university, where you are goig to be all the time in contact with foreing students (30% are not Irish) but, in general, there is not a big social life with local people. The only necessary thing is beeing open minded.

It is better to know Irish people who can give you advice and help you setting up. Cost of living is high but you can find a part-time job, even within the university. (e.g. Disability Services)

the computer facilities are great but sometimes I had to queue for one hour in the library to get access to the internet. That really annoyed me...

On campus, there is an organisation called Student Union, which organises trips across Ireland and erasmus parties. There are also plenty of societies to join.
