When you first get there do not go out every night the pubs will still be there in 4 months save for traveling.

Take advantage of Student Travel services. The University had an STA right on campus and it was a great way to find cheap travel.

You will travel more, and you might spend more from that point of view. But with the exchange rates being what they are it was really good going from the american dollar to the australian dollar.
