"Exploring Mass Communication with Advertising at Northumbria University: A Transformative Journey!

Studying Mass Communication with Advertising at Northumbria University was an incredible journey that broadened my understanding of media and communication in today's dynamic world. The program offered a diverse range of modules that equipped me with practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

The module on 'Approaches to Media and Culture' laid the foundation by introducing me to key issues in mass communication and critical concepts. It challenged me to analyze media objects in relation to contextual knowledge and theory integration.

'Writing for Digital' honed my skills as an independent journalist, teaching me to identify news stories and write effectively for various publications. I learned the art of clear and concise writing, crucial for success in journalism and digital communication.

The 'Key Debates in Media History' module took me on a historical journey, exploring the development of mass media and its impact on contemporary society. It shed light on the role of various media forms like print, radio, television, and advertising throughout different eras.

'Media and Morality' delved into moral philosophy and its application to contemporary media. I engaged in lively debates on moral concerns raised by classical thinkers and their relevance in today's media landscape.

In 'Media Cultures,' I delved into the influence of communication technology on human interaction, economics, popular culture, and global consumerism. The module provided a case study approach, connecting the concepts with real-life examples that resonated with my daily experiences.

'Researching Audiences' exposed me to different traditions of audience research and reception studies. I learned how to critically analyze audience engagement with media and evaluate original research in the field.

The 'Media Methodologies' module prepared me for independent research projects, equipping me with skills in research design, methodology selection, and project presentation. It laid the groundwork for future academic endeavors and the dissertation.

Exploring the televisual representation of 'Cultural Identities on Screen' deepened my understanding of how gender, ethnicity, and regional identities are constructed through different genres and media outlets. It challenged me to reflect on the role of television in shaping cultural identities.

The 'Media Industries' module provided a critical understanding of contemporary mass communication practices, trends, and developments. Symposiums led by industry experts and guest speakers from various media sectors offered valuable insights into the field.

'Media Events' offered a fascinating exploration of media events' dynamics, practices, and socio-political significance. Through case studies, I gained a deeper understanding of how events are structured and their impact on industry and society.

The 'Mass Communication Case Study' module allowed me to apply my research skills to investigate social, economic, and cultural phenomena related to mass communication. I studied iconic case studies and learned how to conduct my own research, preparing me for future essays and professional work.

In 'Cinema and Society,' I critically analyzed the relationship between US cinema and social contexts, examining its role as a mass communication industry, outlet for personal expression, and political tool. This module deepened my appreciation for the significance of studying cinema.

'Advertising Theories and Contexts' delved into the theoretical underpinnings of advertising, exploring their application to contemporary examples. Through workshops and discussions, I gained a nuanced understanding of the intersection between theory and practice.

'Promotional Writing' provided practical skills in writing for promotional materials and brand engagement. I learned to craft persuasive texts, manage corporate identities, and understand the relationship between audience, medium, and persuasion.

'Analysing Advertising: Designs and Demographics' honed my ability to evaluate and critique advertising campaigns. By analyzing design choices and demographic targeting, I gained insights into the creative process and the shaping of ideological presumptions.

Studying Mass Communication with Advertising at Northumbria University was a fantastic experience. Recommended.

L'espace carrières
Northumbria University provides a highly supportive environment for individuals from diverse cultures and races. Their careers team is truly exceptional, offering students numerous opportunities to engage in both local and international internships.

Northumbria University provides students with the flexibility to take gap years and even offers exciting opportunities like the Amsterdam course. In the third year, eligible students have the chance to go to Amsterdam, provided they have the necessary visa status. This program adds an enriching international dimension to their education. Additionally, the university's supportive environment and extensive resources ensure that students can make the most of these unique experiences.

They frequently promote contests and showcase academies for students to participate in. I was fortunate to be chosen as the sole Northumbria student to attend a short summer academy in Manchester. The university is LGBTQ+ friendly and boasts a wide range of student union groups. It attracts many students from China and East Asia, making it a highly recommended choice.

Points forts
At the university, students have the opportunity to collaborate on group projects. For instance, my team had the pleasure of working on a beer advertising commercial, which was incredibly enjoyable.
Inconvénients
The university should invite more international speakers and offer a wider range of activities during their talks.

The courses were not challenging or stimulating
enough for me, however the practical side of Northumbria's business school was fantastic, especially compared to that of what I heard from my Newcastle University business student friends.

I was able to complete most assignments within one week at the end of the semester.

Points forts
a lot of opportunities to expand my CV, scholarhsip for volunteering and studying abroad, and many consulting and placement job opportunities pushed our way.
Inconvénients
teachers didn't believe in the students abilities so we weren't pushed to our limits. Also not a competitive environment within students either.
