Academic
Course recommendations
make sure that you have some local groupmates, it makes life more easier because they really care about the grades and you get to know their working skills and probably make up some friends. it is very interesting! I got very bad information about the availability of courses bevore I could register for them. When I wanted to register for special courses it turned out that they were beeing held in the other semester. Hopefully this information will improve because I wasted a lot time with the lack of information. Courses are very work intensive, 1 mid-term, 1 final test, group presentations, group projects and several individual papers are too much. all in all I think it was a nice experiance to see how Chinese study and teach.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
housing costs off campus in town are quite expensive and means long ways to uni.

it was my first experiance with campus life. it is quite convenient to live on campus because it was cheap and you have all facilities you need for living there. eg. laundry, restaurants,... the size of rooms are quite ok and some of them have even sea view. in the room there is a big locker, a cupboard, a desk, shelves, a bed which is too small (190x70cm) and a chair. rooms have air condition and a van. the only disadvantage is that you have to share the bathroom and toilet with the whole floor.

I had no difficulties to understand the professors. Their English was perfect as they came from America, Ireland and Hong Kong. Communication in every day life was also no problem as all people in HK speak English very well.

Places not to be missed outside of Kunming. Defenitely go to Li Jiang (small chinese village preserved by UNESCO) this is china as you've dreamed to see it. You can stop in Dali which is on the way from Kunming to Li Jiang to see cormoran fishing on the lake, it's worth it. If you have more time, take the round trip ride on the little train that goes from Kunming to "Hekou" (on the boarder with Vietnam). It was built buy french people in the 40's. The ride through mountains with water falls and terrasse fields is very scenic, so is the train.

Good university and great level of difficulty

Overall
When you study in China, there is not just the complex understanding of concepts and courses, but also the language barrier. Fortunately by the time I started I could already speak and understand some Chinese which helped me a lot because some teachers couldn't speak English even though they were supposed to; great famous teachers in their field of knowledge, but the language barrier was always there.
