Personal spending habits
While being in a foreign country you just don't think about expenses as carefully as in your home country. So I spent more money, especially for travelling and nightlife.

Personal comments
It takes a couple of days/weeks to organize a money transaction from your home country to your bank account. A credit card is necessary in many situations.
And: If you do spent time on looking for cheap options regarding travelling, going out, you can save money. Internet is a powerful and very useful institution in Australia!

Language of instruction: English

Personal comments
After having arrived in Australia I noticed very soon that the Australian language does have differences to the formal British or American English you learn at school or university, respectively. But I coped pretty well, and after a couple of weeks you really get used to it.

Overall
I wish I had known...
If I knew how great my year 2001 would become I definitely would have tried to arrange a longer stay!

In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
The 'University of Sydney' has about 35000 local students. Additionally, there are about 3500 international students every semester. The administration really cares about you and you come to know to many people from all parts of this world - not only at university, but also in town. It's a multi-culti population.

Courses in Germany are just too theoretical to compare them with courses I did in Sydney. Great experience - they call it hands-on teaching!

Inside info? You wouldn't have time to listen to all my recommendations. It's amazing how much I learnt during two semesters in Sydney. If you wonna know anything in detail let me know.
Just to start with: The best pub not to be missed is definitely the famous 'Friend In Hand'-Pub in Glebe.

Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Same advantages as living with a family. But for the second time you don't really need support from your host family. You're more independent when living in an own apartment.

Personal comments
Most International Students lived in accomodations provided by the university. Generally , Australian accomodation is slightly more expensive than accomodation in Germany. Living in a family was the best choice to start with in a foreign country.
