I wish I had known...
I went the summer before I started University. I wish I had known that upon arrival at my home institution I would have to go directly to second year. That kind of sucked 'cause I felt my grammar still needed work.

IF you have the chance GO! Laval is a fantastic place and Quebec City is amazing. It's like a little slice of Europe. It's a lot more Francophone than Montreal but still not an extreme like Chicoutimi or something. It's fantastic!!! Everyone loved it. I can honestly say it was the best summer of my life -- my boyfriend who went with me says the same thing. I should also note that I now go to school at UofT with some people who were at Laval that summer and there were some who loved it so much they almost considered transfering. The place was amazing and I would go back in a heartbeat!

The very first time I went to Quebec City I thought to myself..........Wow! I want to live here one day. It's that sort of place. If you go there is NO way you will regret it. Take my recommendation and live on campus. Also, IF you are a Canadian student you have the opportunity to obtain a bursary from the Canadian Government. You can apply through the Council of Ministers of Education of Canada. They pay for your tuition, your books, and your housing........on top of that you receive a subsidy of $500 for the 5 weeks that you are there. Also, a lot of the excursions that the University offers are subsidised. It's a fantastic opportunity! I would suggest that you take a chance and go for it! :o)

Most students have a good balance between fun, studies and work, which is a good thing to do I think.

Just go for it! This is a great university with a typical Northamerican campus, full of facilities in a dynamic city...a bit far from other towns though, but distances are to an American scale of course.

The University of Toronto was a great experience for me. I applied to one program which I was not accepted to but the department urged me to consider a different program to which I was accepted to so I liked that my the department considered which program would be the best fit for me and didn't just reject me completely.

I was able to thrive in my program with the support of teaching assistants, professors, and my classmates when it came to difficult subjects and preparing for exams and assignments.

There are so many resources and activities available at a big university especially in a big city so you can't complain that you are ever bored or have no way of meeting people. I had a great experiences in my 2 years there.

I wish I had known...
I really wished I had made every sacrifice in order to have my own bachelor's appartment, and not live in residences. Even paying twice the price for about the same space is worth not having to deal with delusional people... Though I guess I was particularly (but maybe not unusually...) unlucky.

Be prepared for a competitive attitude from other students of the kind crush or be crushed. And also other students expecting that same attitude from yourself, even if you would not be like that in a thousand years. A lot of misunderstandings can be avoided by keeping this in mind.

Travelling is best done by walking within the city, since the bus fares are expensive (2$), and though the city is quite sparse. You get used to walking 10 minutes for a coffee shop. For going outside the city, trains are good, though not that cheap. Car pooling is best.

Make sure you know what courses you are taking and that your level of English is quite reasonable to endure the experience.

Bring a bottle of wine and ask every friend who visits you to bring you one. No kidding! Air France offers good deals for travelling from Barcelona. Air Canada is trying to set a direct conection between Toronto and Barcelona so check it out.
