Why?
The dorms (Kolej Komenskeho) were very depressing and clearly communist-inspired. They were alright and there were lots of cool people, though.

Personal spending habits
The American dollar wasn't nearly as bad as it is now. When I was there it was 20 CZK = 1 USD and now it's 16. Food prices are close, with peanut butter being expensive.

At the beginning there is two weeks of Intensive Czech, which helps a little. Most people speak at least a little English and Czech is a very hard language.
