The Position

Within pRED, the goal of the Institute Human Biology (IHB) is to disrupt the traditional drug discovery process through innovative, big and bold ideas focused on advancing our ability to use more predictive human model systems.

You will work on a collaborative project between Institute of Human Biology at pRED and Genentech, exploring how human diversity is reflected in drug response. In your role, you will support establishment of epithelial cultures from patient-derived organoids for drug screening and use cutting edge methods, such as high content imaging to characterize patient diversity at various biological scales. For this project, you will join the Organoid Phenotyping platform of the IHB, giving you a unique opportunity to apply various automation techniques to complex human model systems. Throughout the project you will be mentored by experts in the field of organoid biology, allowing you to expand your skills and knowledge. You will plan, execute, and document experiments, analyse data, and present results in a team spanning Europe and the US.

Your impact:

* Cell culture of organoids, assume responsibility for the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of organoid culture activities.
* Develop and implement SOPs for automated culture of many intestinal organoid lines in collaboration with scientists at IHB
* Develop and implement SOPs for toxicity assays in adult intestinal stem cells either in transwell format or in matrigel embedded organoids in collaboration with scientists at IHB
* Operate a robotic liquid handling platform for cell culture and assay execution.
* Communicate with relevant stakeholders and supervisors about the status of the projects and of critical problem areas.
* Present your results to scientists at IHB and Genentech.
* Document and report all relevant laboratory processes.

Your Profile:

* You are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program or a pursued your Master's degree not longer than 12 months prior to the start date in life sciences or a related field
* Strong laboratory skills, cell culture experience is essential
* Experience in BSL2 cell culture of advantage
* Experience with epithelial organoid culture (colon, small intestine) of advantage
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
* Affinity for data analytics
* Experience with microscopy of strong advantage
* Experience with image analysis of advantage
* Basic knowledge of Python of advantage

The preferred start date of the internship is as soon as possible, for 6 months.
