I had already lived 2 years in France, so I had no language problems. On a general basis, I think you get a long way trying to express yourself and communicate in French with the French, they become much more friendly and appreciate yoour efforts. When I was there the university did not provide any language instructions. However, it was not necessary on my behalf since I knew French very well even before going to France.
