In Germany the student is left to choose which courses they want to take. There is a specific number of places and once the list is full, that's it. It is on a literal first-come, first-serve basis. Professors and tutors have very few hours allocated to see students and so it can be difficult to see them in a face-to-face situation. Messages, however usually receive replies fairly quickly. There are hundreds of courses available, and as an Erasmus student, you can choose whatever you want, as long as you feel that your language is up to scratch!

Motivation and pro-activity is most important regarding German university life. DO NOT leave it to late to sign up to courses. It would perhaps be better for German institutions to study other international universities to see their methods of course choice. They could then advise their partner universities of the German university system so that mistakes are not made by the students on arrival.

My year abroad counted towards my final grade, and, because most other Erasmus students only had to pass the year, I constantly had to remind my lecturers that I needed a good grade and not just a pass, because I found there was a tendency to just pass Erasmus students. But my percevierance paid off in the end, so I would recommend communicating with your lecturers.

If studying languages then obviously choose language based courses, such as translation. I also did a history course, something to do with "Stereotypen und Reisen", which was very interesting. If Matthias Wagner is still teaching there, I recommend his courses.

It's very hard to find out what courses are on offer and whether they are suitable for you. Try and get hold of the big course list (available to buy in the bookshops) before you start and then go and visit each department as soon as you can for a more detailed course list.

I would like to see more help given to Erasmus students in choosing courses.

I did a practical Erasmus and I had not to study subjects. My work consisted of a research work in the laboratory. On the other hand, I had the opportunity to study German free. If you are student, you can study free the whole languages at Sprachzentrum.
