When I arrived in France, I had already and advanced, but not fluent, level in French. My main hope was to be able to improve it as much as I could. However, language classes offered by the schools are bad and most of the French speakers wanted me to speak in English or Spanish with them. However, it was useful, afterwards I learned vocabulary and they started to teach me how to speak in the correct way.

As suggested in the field for classes - I mainly spoke French in class and while participating in sport activities. With most of my friends (since they where exchange students as well) I spoke English. But involvment in clubs, sports and parties helps to get to know french people as well.

We had equally the possibility to take courses in French and English, and to practice both of them (wrinting essays, giving presentations, etc). I only regret that the text of all case studies were in English, so I couldn't improve my written French as much I wanted.

Well, i had no problems communication in English, plus i could practice my French a lot =)) But in the beginning it was difficult to understand the accents of the professors, although all the classes were in English. The most complicated for me was to understand the professor from Canada. I had experience of "french english" before, so it did not take long to adapt.
