Knowing how to speak english (even not fluent) is enough to survive in Finland. Some can come back from this country after a year without knowing any sentence, because locals deals so good with foreign languages (swedish also official language, almost all fluent in english, even some know german, spanish or french). But to integrate ourself completely inside the local community, and to keep our mind open, it is really good (not compulsory) to try (at least) to learn finnish (in that sence, lectures at the university are very well made, especially the each one teach one program)

I used to speak scholar english and being here with exchange students from all around the world with one common language was a really nice experience and a great improvement. Everyone who tried to make some efforts though it was not his mother tongue was able after two months to communicate easily.

Regarding to the language of my host country i was just able to learn basic phrases and not to communicate fluently. In contrary, when i went to study abroad i was already able to speak fluently the language of instruction.

The local language, Finnish, is an extremely difficult language to learn. I participated in two beginner courses, which gave me the ability to communicate in basic phrases and to continue learning by talking to locals.

ALthough it is very hard to learn Finnish, almost everyone speaks English so, assuming that you also speak English, you should have no problems in communicating both in the university and in the country in general.
