Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I would live in a house with other students. Most Flemish students live in small student rooms because they go home every weekend. Yet, for an international student, it would be better to live in a house with other students for the company.

I think the university should help students find housing and should offer housing on campus for international students (ie non-exchange students and non-Erasmus students). I was basically told to fend for myself, and it would have been better to have a built-in environment (ie a residence/dorm) where I could meet other students.

Leuven has a very good system for accomodation based on the compilation of private offers in a database open to the public without any charge. The accomodation is mainly arranged directly with the owner of the place, avoiding the intervention of expensive real state agencies.

Normally students get not very good and expensive housing opportunities. Over all, if you arrive very late. Anyway, although I arrive late I manage to find a good house in a privilage place. I really like it.

They have a good housing service, that helps you with your contracts, and have a data base with all the houses/rooms available in the city (and the people that work there are very nice)

It was an amazing experience, so I would be readily willing to repeat it. Considering that Leuven has university buildings spread all over the city, the advantages associated with being on campus aren't really applicable.

Finding a single room in Leuven was an easy task, yet I was looking for a studio which proved much more complex.

You have more freedom and independance to do what you wish to do. The disadvantage (compared to a campus/residence), is that there aren't so many students all around, but sometimes this is better.

They could have help us more to find something (decent). They gave us a list of possible housing but it wasn't of much use.
