First I would like to insist on one point: to hesitate to join societies, you will have enough spare time to involve yourself in activities you like and you can have good fun there. In Lancaster, pubs are opened til 11.30pm and discothecs til 2am. I particularly like the Blue Anchor( very quiet pub which loos like a navy and serves great variety of beers), the Friary ( this pub sets in a sort of old church - very impressive- and there is karaoke every monday)and the Fibber Mc Gees ( an Irrish pub with Live music on Wednesday). To be honest, discothecs in Lancaster are quite disappointing. I am used to going to the sugarhouse which is the student nightclubs but I can never be sure I will enjoy. If you want to fully appreciate life at Lancaster University you MUST try at least once the Carleton (student night every Wednesday). This is a very special (and weird and full of alcohol) atmosphere, you may not like it but at last it is a very...learnful experience !! Moreover if you like having a walk in wild areas, Lancaster is very close to the Lake District which id definitely one of the most somptuous region in the UK. Furthermore travelling by coach or trains is easy and not too expensive (do not hesitate to buy the young person railcard) ...the only issue is that the railweb is archaic and trains are often late or on strike.

lancaster is a perfect place from where you can travel all the north of england, the lake district, the yorkshire dales. Even scotland is not more than 1 hour away by car. ALthough Lancaster and the towns nearby are quite ugly on the weekends it is the best idea to travel around.

Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I started to live with a family. They were very nice (which is not the case of all host families) but I did not feel free to invit friends or listen to the music. Then I moved to campus. The room was great and people living on campus were nice. However the campus was a bit far from the city center. So if I was to go back I would choose a room/flat in town on my own or with flatmates.

The good point was that it is always easy to move if you want to change accomodation. Host family: Not homogenuous, some families are very nice and very helpful (especially when you just arrived and are on your own). Nevertheless you can have some bad surprises sometimes. On campus: Depending on the college you are in some rooms are better than other (size, noise, sharing the kitchen and toilets, etc). If you are moving on campus during the year, you can ask for a visit of all the rooms available. In a flat: As a student it is almost impossible to live on your own ... but easy to share a house. The 2nd year students all live in houses in town. Thus there is a constant demand for new flatmates.

Edge Hill keep on doing what you have done for the last twelve years and you will have students flowing into your institution for centuries to come.

Edge Hill University was an experience I will never forget. I still remeber the day we left for Edge Hill like it was yeaterday, this was the happiest day of my life. I loved every second of it and did not want to leave. The people at Edge Hill made me feel as though i was actualy English which made me feel at home. The students learn alot from you as well as you learning alot from them. The faculty and staff at this wonderful institution were very helpful and loved having american students in his or her class. If i had to do this experience again i would do it faster than a heart beats. Edge Hill University is an experience that helped me to become more independant as well as grow up as a person which is what i need to do before i graduated. This experience really opend my eyes to tons and tons of many things and i am very very very thankful to have gone to Edge Hill. I still keep in touch with many of my friends that i met in europe. Edge Hill University is a great institution that helps students grow as well as provide them the opportunity to learn both outside the classroom as well as inside. Thanks Edge Hill for an unforgetable experience that will burn alive in my heart for ever. Rob Honzo Edge Hill Fall of 99

I was able to take all of the classes I needed while over in England. Their courses are run very differently, but once you get used to their system it is fine.

It is hard to get used to not studying for the entire year and then having all of your exams at the end. Each class has one final in May/June with no midterms or anything to help balance out your scores (although some have papers due at the end of the terms). For example, if you have a class first term, your final would be in May/June and therefore you have to remember what you learned at the beginning of the year. I would suggest telling the future students to be prepared for this because it seems like you aren't doing any work and then you are overloaded!!
