I come from Romania, where the average salary is about 200 euro. os, living in the Netherlands was more expensieve, but I was there with a fellowship programme. Therefore, I could afford living there. Living in The Netherlands is not more expensieve then living in other EU countries.

There was a market held every weekend in the centre of the city, where second hand household items were available for reasonable price.

very good earning while doing part time jobs. students were allowed to work 20hrs/week without tax.

I spent less in telephone because there was no need to use it (we could communicate with the excellent network services (internet) I spent more in housing because there wasn´t another option, in spain it is much cheaper. I spent more in travel because i did not want to miss the chance to visit cities and countries nearby, that otherwise are so far away from Spain
