Food at hawker centers is cheaper but if you go to a normal restaurant, expect to pay typical American prices. Alcohol is fairly expensive (sin tax). Phone is reasonable if you get a pre-paid plan with minutes and use wifi (whatsapp, etc.) for most of your communication.

Nothing surprising. The more you do, the more you'll spend. MRT/Bus are reasonable cost-wise but the costs do add up.

When doing an exchange, one gets to know many people, so one goes out more often. Singapore is also a good place to travel around in very cheap South-East Asian countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand...

Food: really not expensive (except if you really want to eat Western food). Nightlife, travel: I wanted to take advantage of being in Singapore to meet other persons, to travel, to discover and understand better the culture.

Books are _very_ cheap. Sending stuff back home seems to be very cheap for europeans... exept for Finnish :-P
